Vancouver Whitecaps 4, New England Revolution 3 | MLS Match Recap
VANCOUVER, B.C. – A 23rd-minute red card changed everything in Saturday’s match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the New England Revolution, as the Whitecaps rallied from an early two-goal deficit to post a dramatic 4-3 win at BC Place.
Following rookie defender Andrew Farrell’s dismissal for dragging down Kenny Miller in the box on a breakaway, the Whitecaps surged back with four straight goals to snap New England’s five-game unbeaten streak.
Midfielder Camilo converted the penalty kick after Farrell’s costly ejection, Miller scored two goals and defender Jordan Harvey added a goal for Vancouver (5-5-4), winners of two of their past three games.
Goalkeeper Brad Knighton also came up with a fingertip save on a free kick from midfielder Lee Nguyen in the 95th minute to preserve the win after Revs second-half substitute Dimitry Imbongo scored to leave the result in doubt until the final whistle.
Juan Agudelo and Kelyn Rowe each scored a goal in the first 20 minutes of the match for the Revs (5-5-5). Agudelo latched onto a long ball from defender Chris Tierney in the 10th minute for his third goal in the past five games, and Rowe padded the Revs’ lead 10 minutes later after a build-up with Diego Fagundez.
But then came the turning point of the match, when Miller slipped past the Revolution back line on a ball over the top from midfielder Russell Teibert. Farrell clipped Miller and drew his first career red card, and Camilo promptly converted the ensuing penalty kick to cut the lead to 2-1.
Then Miller bagged his first goal in the 39th minute, chipping over Stephen McCarthy’s head and running through alone to score a left-footed effort into the bottom right corner.
Harvey fired the Whitecaps into the lead four minutes later, getting on the end of a cross from Teibert.
Miller added a wonder-strike in the 68th minute, firing into the top right corner on the half volley after receiving a ball from Camilo.
The Revs brought the game close in the 84th minute, as Imbongo ran at Whitecaps defender Carlyle Mitchell and got the better of him, before blasting into the left side of the goal.
Moments later, Nguyen forced Knighton into a save when his curling free kick effort sailed toward the top corner, but the ‘keeper managed to tip the ball over the crossbar.
The Whitecaps return to action on Wednesday against Chivas USA at BC Place. The Revs must wait until June 26 for their next match, when they take on D.C. United in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
