Recap: Davies, Wolff help DC cool off Seattle 2-1

WASHINGTON – Charlie Davies and Josh Wolff tallied a goal apiece as D.C. United put and end to the Seattle Sounders’ six-game unbeaten streak at RFK Stadium on Wednesday evening, winning 2-1 and snapping their own two-game losing spell.

Seattle looked to take advantage of a D.C. side fielding four starters 20 years older or less. There were some nervy moments for United’s new-look back line in the game’s early moments, as Fredy Montero and Nate Jaqua were a handful for Dejan Jakovic and Ethan White.

But United struck in the 31st minute, as Andy Najar’s through ball found Davies in space. The US international shrugged off the challenge of Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and squared a perfect ball for Wolff, who slammed a shot past Kasey Keller.

Both sides had early chances in the second half, but it was the same offensive trio to double DC’s lead in the 52nd minute. Najar once again created space on the ball, and slotted in Wolff on the right wing. The 34-year-old veteran send in an inch-perfect cross to Davies for his league-leading sixth goal of the season.

There was still plenty of fight left in Seattle, and coach Sigi Schmid sent in Roger Levesque and Mauro Rosales to try and turn things around. It was Montero who made something happen offensively, as the Colombian won a penalty in the 70th minute that midfielder Brad Evans converted to make it 2-1.

With momentum building, the Sounders had two chances to tie the game. The first came on a free header by Alvaro Fernandez in the 73rd minute, but DC ‘keeper Bill Hamid was alert to keep the shot out. Three minutes later, Hamid dove to keep a firmly struck Montero shot out as well.

Only needing one goal for a road point, United managed to maintain possession and held on for the victory.

With the victory, DC move to 3-4-1. They’ll host FC Dallas on Saturday. Seattle, meanwhile, drop to 3-3-3 on the season and travel to Columbus on Saturday.
