What's at stake?
Seattle embark on their CONCACAF Champions League adventure against El Salvador’s Metapán. The return leg set for Aug. 3 in San Salvador, and the winner of this home-and-away series will compete in the group stages of the Champions League.
Seattle earned their spot in this preliminary round series by virtue of their 2009 US Open Cup Championship.
Seattle Sounders FC
Seattle have managed to turn things around in league play, with a 2-0-1 record in their last three contests. Combined with strong results in the US Open Cup (wins over Portland and Los Angeles), the Sounders look ready to stake their claim internationally. Upon their inception, ownership made the FIFA Club World Cup a priority – winning the CCL is the prerequisite for entering that competition.
AD Isidro Metapán
One of El Salvador’s strongest teams, Metapán boasts several strong individual players, including Odir Flores, Mark Blanco and Paolo Suárez (brother of Uruguay’s World Cup hero Luis Suárez).
In his research on the Salvadoran club, Seattle coach Sigi Schmid has discovered that the team “works very hard” and “battles for every loose ball and fights for everything.”
Heroes & Villains
Mark Blanco vs. Taylor Graham -- It’s not clear if Seattle will use their starters in this midweek match, especially coming off a Sunday night league game. It’s likely that Jeff Parke and Patrick Ianni will rest in advance of a league game at San Jose, which would leave Taylor Graham to keep tabs on Metapán’s primary scoring threat.
Stat that makes you go “Hmm.."
The winner of this match will be drawn into the difficult Group C of the competition, which already holds Monterrey of Mexico and Saprissa of Costa Rica.
