Intro
These two teams met twice in back-to-back games in the first week of June, with United knocking Real Salt Lake out of US Open Cup play before the two teams played to a scoreless draw in league action. D.C. are looking to start to make a move up the table to put themselves in contention for a playoff spot, while RSL are eager get back into the groove that they enjoyed prior to the World Cup break.
Real Salt Lake news
RSL sent three players to this week's MLS All-Star game, and hope that all of them will be able to fully contribute on Saturday. Fellow All-Star Kyle Beckerman chose to stay behind as he returned to the pitch just last week from a foot injury. Reserve players Kyle Reynish, Collen Warner, and Chris Schuler have all been sent out on loan recently in order to get them some playing time in advance of upcoming Champions League action.
D.C. United news
D.C. have high hopes for newly arrived DP Branko Boskovic, who they look to for filling the creative, playmaking role that the team has been lacking. In addition, Argentine forward Pablo Hernandez is also a valuable addition looking to acclimate into United's system. The player creating the most buzz, however, is youngster Andy Najar. The Honduran youngster was signed earlier this year from DC’s academy program and has added much-needed energy to their attack.
Heroes & villains
Branko Boskovic vs Kyle Beckerman: While Najar may create some danger and put pressure on the Real Salt Lake backline, Boskovic has the potential to tie this team together and create some congruity in the attack. Beckerman wasn’t fully up to his usual self in his return last week, but regaining his form is critical to the success of RSL in this match and going forward. He will play a key role keeping Boskovic from connecting with his teammates.
Stat that makes you go “hmm..."
The curse of the big game: Last season RSL scored six goals against New England at home, and then went on to score just twice in the next five matches. The team scored five goals against New England earlier this month, and have scored only twice in their last three matches, far below the season average.
