Intro
These two sides battled to a dour 0-0 draw in Toronto in early June that was defined by physical play and a lack of clear chances for both sides. Neither will want to settle for a single point this time around.
Toronto are currently clinging to the final playoff spot, while Kansas City are just trying to get back into the postseason conversation after struggling in the past few months.
In the end, this one is the proverbial six-pointer as both teams jockey for position in a crowded Eastern Conference.
Kansas City
Don’t expect a Manchester United-sized hangover from Kansas City this week. If anything, last Sunday’s marquee victory has reenergized manager Peter Vermes’ team.
Just when it appeared that the Wizards were doomed to miss the playoffs again, the side ripped off two league road results and a 2-1 victory against the Red Devils.
Now, the focus is squarely back on finding a way to claw back into the playoff race (KC is only seven points out), and a victory against Toronto would be the ideal start.
Toronto
By all accounts, the season didn’t start particularly rosy for Toronto. But now that Preki has had a few months to work with his side, the results are starting to pile up. TFC have been beaten just once in their last nine league matches. The only complaint is all the draws—four in the last six games.
But regardless of the ties, the Reds are now in the thick of the playoff race and building momentum for the stretch run.
However, they still struggle on the road. Preki’s side is only 1-5-1 away from BMO Field.
Heroes & Villains
Stephane Auvray vs. Julian de Guzman. Auvray has been a revelation since returning from injury, and de Guzman’s class is well known. When it comes to defensive bite and midfield acumen, both these players have it in bunches. The key for both midfield anchors will be their ability to transition their respective sides from defense to offense. Whoever can do that better should come out on top in a game that is more than likely to be on the physical side.
Stat that makes you go “Hm…”
TFC have scored more than one goal in a game only twice since the beginning of May, a stretch of 16 games in all competitions.
