High-flying attacks face off in a Rocky Mountain matinee

Keys to the Game
Colorado
  • Score early. The Rapids need to impose themselves early in this game to help break out of their winless rut.
  • Midfield strength. Ferreira has been very dangerous all season and the Colorado midfield will need to keep him quiet.

FC Dallas
  • Defensive strength. The Rapids should come out all guns blazing and the Dallas defense will need to be at full concentration in the opening 20 minutes or so.
  • Creation. Dallas, like the Rapids, have sometimes struggled to create chances and have tinkered with their formation at times. They will need to find the right one against a tough Rapids’ defense.

Intro

This is a crucial game for both Western Conference teams. They both seem to be at make-or-break points of their season. Can Colorado finally push into the conversation of a true playoff contender? Can Dallas take advantage of their fine form to actually challenge Real Salt Lake and even the LA Galaxy for the West crown?

Colorado Rapids

The Rapids have faltered in recent weeks, having not won since before the World Cup break, a stretch of six games. Starting a week ago, head coach Gary Smith was eyeing a three-match stretch against in-conference opponents games as a key part of the season.

“Three good games, three extremely competitive games and three really good opportunities to put a marker down,” Smith said of the three games against Seattle, Dallas and San Jose.

The period didn’t start well, though, with a 2-1 defeat in Seattle last weekend, despite the Rapids’ playing well. Omar Cummings scored the lone Rapids goal, his 5th of the season, good for second on the team behind Conor Casey.

FC Dallas

Dallas are one of, if not the in-form team in MLS at the moment. They are unbeaten in seven straight, including an impressive 2-0 victory over defending champions Real Salt Lake.

The man in form is Colombian attacking midfielder David Ferreira, fresh off his MLS All-Star appearance on Wednesday against Manchester United. He has 4 goals and 5 assists on the season.

The latest acquisition, striker Milton Rodriguez, has proven a handful. He his size and power has added another weapon to the FCD attack, and he notched his first goal for the club last week in a draw with Toronto.

Energetic midfielder Dax McCarty, who has been hampered with a right thigh injury for the past few weeks, is expected to travel to Colorado.

Heroes & Villains

David Ferreira vs. Pablo Mastroeni and Jeff Larentowicz. The Rapids defensive midfield duo will have their work cut out trying to stop Dallas’ key creator. The Dallas player is coming off an impressive substitute performance in the MLS All Star Game and should keep fellow MLS all star Larentowicz as well as veteran Mastroeni extremely busy.

Stat that makes you go “Hm..."

Despite Colorado’s recent poor run, they have still only lost once at DSG Park this season, a 1-0 loss to the LA Galaxy back in May.
