Game intro
This is a battle of two teams on the upswing. San Jose haven’t lost since the World Cup break, going 1-0-3 in that timeframe. But the Quakes were disappointed at giving up the lead on two occasions in a 2-2 tie against the league-leading Galaxy last week. Seattle are in good position to avenge their 1-0 loss at home to San Jose – a match in which they outshot San Jose 18-3 – with four wins and a tie in their last five competitive matches.
San Jose Earthquakes
It’s more of the same for San Jose, who are
still weighing their transfer-window options. A DP is not a realistic
option, given the team’s budgetary constraints, but with Brazilians
Andre Luiz definitely out for the season and Eduardo potentially joining
him, the Quakes need to do something. General manager John Doyle may be
right in saying that his current roster is good enough to make the
playoffs, but that assumes the remaining talent stays healthy the rest
of the way, which isn’t a good bet. In the meantime, the Quakes will
count on getting by with their counterattacking style.
Seattle Sounders FC
The Sounders moved on from the Freddie Ljungberg Era by officially signing midfielder Alvaro Fernandez, a 24-year-old Uruguayan international. As of Friday morning, there was no official word if Fernandez’s ITC would come through in time for him to debut against the Quakes. The speed of Steve Zakuani – the reigning MLS Player of the Week after his brace powered Seattle past Colorado 2-1 – gave San Jose problems early in the teams’ first meeting, until Quakes captain Ramiro Corrales got the measure of him.
Heroes and villains
Fredy Montero vs. Jason Hernandez. Montero, whose tally beat Isidro Metapan in CCL play, seeks redemption after missing a short-range, wide-open chance at an equalizer in San Jose’s earlier victory. The just-turned-23-year-old looks like he’s rounding back into the form that made him the MLS 2009 Newcomer of the Year. Hernandez has been settling into his new spot of right back, dialing in long passes to spark San Jose’s counterattacks. The extra running on the wing has left him fatigued at the end of games, however, so the Quakes must guard against the potential of a late equalizer.
Stat that makes you go “Hmm”
The Earthquakes have beaten up on the eight MLS teams that currently have fewer points than San Jose, having gone 4-1-2 against them, including their 1-0 win, courtesy of a Chris Wondolowski goal, in Seattle on May 22.
