FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – After defeating the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 in overtime in front of 34,643 fans at Foxborough Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the first MLS Cup title is headed to Washington, D.C.

Los Angeles’s Eduardo Hurtado gave the Galaxy an early lead when he found the back of the net just five minutes into the match. Chris Armas extended the Galaxy’s lead in the 56th minute to put Los Angeles in prime position to capture the Cup.

D.C. United were not to be denied, however. Trailing by two goals with just over 18 minutes remaining, United staged an improbable comeback to force extra time.

Late-game heroics from Tony Sanneh and Shawn Medved, who tallied for United in the 72nd and 81st minutes, respectively, forced the extra period.

In overtime, it took D.C.’s Eddie Pope only four minutes to find the winner for United and propel the club to the league crown.
