An MLS original, the Tampa Bay Mutiny seemed poised for a bright future in their inaugural season when a team boasting league MVP Carlos Valderrama, Scoring Champion Roy Lassiter, Rookie of the Year Steve Ralston and future national-teamer Frankie Hejduk compiled the best regular season record in MLS.
Alas, it was not to be. Despite four trips to the playoffs in six years, declining attendance and a failure to find a local owner doomed the Florida club to contraction in 2001 along with the rival Miami Fusion.
