Jan. 14 - Alfonso Mondelo, formerly the head coach of the Long Island Rough Riders, is introduced as the fourth head coach in MetroStars history.
Feb. 1 - The MetroStars make defender Mike Petke their top selection (eighth overall) of the MLS College Draft.
Feb. 2 - The MetroStars are assigned 18-year-old goalkeeper Tim Howard as a Project-40 player.
Feb. 4 - The MetroStars acquire U.S. National Team defender Alexi Lalas from the New England Revolution in the first three-team trade in MLS history.
March 5 - While in Italy for preseason training, the MetroStars drop a 3-1 decision to Roberto Donadoni and A.C. Milan. Jim Rooney scores the lone Metro goal.
June 15 - Tab Ramos becomes the first MetroStar to play in the World Cup, in the USA’s 2-0 loss to Germany. He will soon be joined by Chilean Marcelo Vega.
Sept. 21 - Following a six-game losing streak, Alfonso Mondelo is relieved of his coaching duties and is replaced by former U.S. and Mexico coach Bora Milutinovic.
Oct. 3 - MetroStars drop the second game of the playoffs to the Columbus Crew, 2-1 in the shootout, to end the season.
