Though the 2008 season saw United add its 12th major piece of hardware to the trophy case, the campaign was largely a disappointment as D.C. missed out on the MLS Cup playoffs for the first time since 2002. After a 2-7 start in League play, the team found its groove through the middle part of the year, going 8-3-1 from May 4 until August 23. Unfortunately, injuries decimated Tom Soehn's side and the team's record down the stretch was a dismal 1-5-3. Matters were complicated by the most games in club history - an astonishing 47 fixtures. The team fell short in international competitions, failing to capture hardware in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, SuperLiga and CONCACAF Champions League. The lone bright spot was the team's second U.S. Open Cup championship, which was captured after a 2-1 win over the Charleston Battery of United Soccer League's First Division.
