For the first time in club history, United failed to qualify for post-season competition or capture any sort of hardware. The team managed a record of just 2-9-1 to start the season and never recovered from its early struggles, finishing last in the Eastern Division. The team's midseason 3-1 win over Newcastle United at RFK Stadium was one of the rare positives in a difficult season. Another of the bright spots during the 2000 campaign was the debut of 16-year old midfielder Bobby Convey who at the time of his first game - 3/25 vs. the Los Angeles Galaxy - was the youngest player to play in a MLS game.
