USMNT to take on Guatemala in San Diego in Gold Cup tuneup

The US national team's summer tour is coming to San Diego.

U.S. Soccer announced Saturday that Jurgen Klinsmann's team will face CONCACAF rival Guatemala on July 5 in San Diego in the team's only tune-up before the start of the 2013 Gold Cup. Kickoff at Qualcomm Stadium is set for 11 pm ET, and the match will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network and UniMas.

"This is a very important opportunity for us to get in a good game before the start of the Gold Cup," Klinsmann said in a statement. "It is our goal to win the tournament, and the chance to play Guatemala will be good preparation for our group. We are thrilled to get back to San Diego which has such an outstanding soccer tradition."

The US' preliminary 35-man roster for the Gold Cup was released on Friday.

The United States hold a 13-4-6 advantage in the series against Guatemala dating back to 1977. The Americans have never lost to the Chapines on home soil, collecting an 11-0-1 record.

San Diego will host the USMNT for the first time since 2006, and the team will be in search of its first ever victory in the city having posted an 0-5-2 record. This is the fourth appearance at Qualcomm Stadium, where the US are 0-2-1 in matches from 1997-99.

The US team take on Germany on Sunday (2:30 pm ET, ESPN2/UniMas) at RFK Stadium in Washington in the last of two international friendlies before World Cup qualifying play resumes next week.
