PASADENA, Calif. — Mexico captain Rafa Márquez has been diagnosed with a strained left calf, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

The New York Red Bulls defender fell to the turf after stepping up to challenge US midfielder Michael Bradley in the 40th minute of Mexico’s eventual 4-2 comeback win in the Gold Cup final on Saturday night.

There was no obvious contact, but the injury forced Márquez out of the match immediately afterwards and he was replaced by Héctor Reynoso, one of the three replacement players Mexico were allowed to add to their roster after five were sent home for failing a doping test.

According to a Mexican federation spokesperson, Márquez will be sidelined for eight to 14 days. The Red Bulls have been without his services since May 21, the last time the Tri icon suited up for his club before reporting for Gold Cup duty. Stephen Keel has filled his spot in the Red Bulls lineup for Hans Backe since then.
