Gold Cup: Donovan, Dempsey leave camp for weddings
US national team or your sister’s wedding?
USMNT stars Clint Dempsey and Landon have opted to do both. On the same weekend.
The Washington Post late Wednesday reported that the nation’s top two attacking players will be flying out to their respective sisters' weddings and miss team practices in the process. They will rejoin the US squad hours before the Gold Cup quarterfinal match against Jamaica at RFK Stadium on Sunday.
Donovan and Dempsey went straight from Kansas City, where the USA beat Guadeloupe 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, to California and Texas on Wednesday.
The reports indicated that manager Bob Bradley had granted the players the personal travel well before the start of the 2011 Gold Cup tournament. However, had the US landed a Saturday quarterfinal in New York, the players would have skipped the family engagements.
It is unclear whether Bradley will opt to start them against Jamaica. Both Donovan and Dempsey will be traveling back to camp in Washington on Saturday night.
The USA face Jamaica in the first match of Sunday’s quarterfinal doubleheader, kicking off at 3 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium.
