American Exports: Oguchi Onyewu, Sheffield Wednesday secure survival with big away win

AMSTERDAM – A trio of Americans got dressed up for some Good Friday afternoon action in England's Championship, with Oguchi Onyewu and 10-man Sheffield Wednesday snapping a four-game win drought by winning a 4-2 smash-and-grab affair at Bournemouth.

Working from his now customary place in the heart of the Owls defense, the US international (above) led all players with 11 clearances and five interceptions. Wednesday twice lost the lead before scoring twice in the final four minutes to mathematically clinch their place in the second flight for next season.

Elsewhere, Tim Ream put on a strong two-way display at left back as Bolton stayed bulletproof with a 0-0 draw at Charlton.

The former New York Red Bulls man rang up seven interceptions, five tackles and two blocked shots, all game-high totals. Ream was also active moving forward and could have notched a corner kick assist just after intermission had the finish on his cross not been saved off the line.

One rung above Wednesday in 14th place, Wanderers are now unbeaten in seven, with four clean sheets in that span.

Both Daniel Williams and Reading had an off night, falling 3-0 at Wigan to lose hold of the final promotion playoff berth.

Though on fine form of late, the midfielder was largely invisible at both ends, leaving in the 55th minute carrying a yellow card. With but one win in their last five, the Royals slipped a point shy of the all-important sixth place in the table.
