American Exports: Clint Dempsey's Tottenham stay in Champions League hunt with draw vs. Chelsea
AMSTERDAM – Clint Dempsey and Tottenham Hotspur pulled to within a point of England's fourth and final Champions League berth by fighting back late for a 2-2 draw in a crosstown derby at Chelsea.
The US star entered with the visitors down one with 20 minutes remaining, while compatriot Brad Friedel watched from the dugout. Dempsey created a late opportunity to shoot for the winner by barging into the area on the right, only to fire straight at the Blues netminder Petr Cech.
Thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson's strike 10 minutes from time, Spurs stayed hot on the heels of arch enemies Arsenal with two EPL games to play.
Over in Spain, Oguchi Onyewu got a rare run-out for Málaga, playing the final 14 minutes in their 6-2 demolition at Real Madrid.
In Norway, Steve Clark made three saves to help Hønefoss win for the first time in six Tippeligaen matches, 2-1 at Vålerenga. The hosts hit the winner two minutes from time to reach 10th place.
Mikkel Diskerud worked the last half-hour as Rosenborg tentatively grabbed second place with a 2-1 victory over visiting Tromsø. The Troll Kids halted a four-game win drought.
Over in Israel, Bryan Gerzicich and Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona dropped the State Cup final on penalties after a 1-1 draw against host side Hapoel Ramat Gan.
