Porfirio López may be leaving MLS, but it looks like he’ll get the chance to reacquaint himself with the league quite soon.

The former Philadelphia Union defender is returning to Alajuelense, the club for whom he last suited up before moving to MLS 12 months ago, according to the Costa Rican outfit's official website.

By virtue of their Costa Rican Invierno 2012 title, Alajuelense will participate in the 2013-14 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League. That means the 27-year-old may get a chance to square off with LA, San Jose, Sporting KC or Houston in the group stage of the tournament, which kicks off this summer.

According to one report out of Costa Rica on Friday, López chose to return to his homeland for family reasons. The Costa Rican international found minutes tough to come by in Philadelphia during the 2012 season, appearing in only five games. The Union ultimately declined his option for 2013.
