| How aggregate scoring works |

In an aggregate scoring system, the result is determined by the combined score of both legs of the series. For example (from 2011 Eastern Conference Semifinal):
Note: The "away goals rule" used in many international competitions is NOT in effect in the MLS playoffs. |
WHO QUALIFIES
The top five teams in each conference (see: standings).
STRUCTURE:
Knockout Round: The #4 and #5 seeds in each conference will play in the Knockout Round, which consists of one match hosted by the #4 seed, respectively.
Conference Semifinals: The four Conference Semifinals will be decided by two-game aggregate series, with the lower seed hosting the first leg and the higher seed hosting the second leg. If the aggregate score is tied at the end of regulation time of the second leg, two 15-minute extra time periods will be played in their entirety, followed by penalty kicks, if necessary. The winners will advance to the Conference Championships.
