MLS Match Recap: Chivas USA 3, FC Dallas 1

CARSON, Calif. — An opportunistic Oswaldo Minda capitalized on an immense defensive lapse to help give Chivas USA a come-from-behind, 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon against FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center.

Minda found himself alone inside the box following a turnover in the 76th minute and buried the go-ahead goal with a right-footed shot that zipped past FC Dallas goalkeeper Raúl Fernández. The opportunity surfaced when defender George John couldn’t control a pass deep in his own zone, and Minda cleaned it up as new manager José Luis Sánchez Solá pumped his right fist in excitement.

Sánchez Solá earned his first victory in Major League Soccer, a week following an underwhelming debut that left him questioning his club’s preparation.

COMPLETE LINEUPS AND BOXSCORE

Captain David Ferreira had given FC Dallas a 1-0 lead with a stunning right-footed shot from a difficult angle in the 57th minute, but Juan Agudelo tied it only 11 minutes later. Agudelo, who didn’t start in the season opener last week due to a foot injury, worked his way past Matt Hedges to unleash a left-footed strike that found the back of the net and sent the 6,801 in attendance into jubilation.

The crowd roared again when Giovani Casillas cashed in on a breakaway three-on-one opportunity in stoppage time, beating Fernández with a calm shot to the near post.

Minda’s game-winning goal was his second in a Chivas USA jersey, his previous coming last year in his first season in a 1-0 victory at Toronto FC.

FC Dallas were unlucky after taking the 1-0 advantage, with Hedges hitting the post on a header from the right side of the box in the 60th minute.

Miller Bolaños, like Agudelo making the start Sunday after coming off the bench in the opener, missed a golden opportunity to put the Rojiblancos on the board early in the second half, but the added offensive pressure was only a sign of positive things to come for Chivas USA (1-1).

WATCH THE HIGHLIGHTS

Dallas (1-1) didn’t necessarily have a pretty performance in last week’s 1-0 win over Western Conference rivals Colorado but held on nonetheless, something they couldn’t accomplish Sunday.

The clubs next meet on July 4 in Dallas for the second of three head-to-head regular season matchups.

Chivas USA stay in Los Angeles next week, but are the designated road team for the Mar. 17 SuperClasico against the Galaxy. FC Dallas host the Houston Dynamo on the same date.

Rank Player What We Saw
1 Juan Agudelo (CHV) Solid presence up top in the second half and one moment of brilliance. Chivas need this Juan Agudelo to show up.
2 Oswaldo Minda (CHV) Can't fault him for being in the right place, right time. The second goal was a backbreaker, and it came because Minda was being a pest.
3 David Ferreira (DAL) The goal was great, and he looks more and more himself again every week. If he can surive the hacks, he's back.
