A total of 38 MLS players from 15 countries have been selected to their respective national teams ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and friendlies this week. Unsurprisingly, most of the players selected are in the CONCACAF region, and most of them are from the United States, though Canada, Honduras and Jamaica each have four MLS representatives.
Although Canada won't be featuring in the qualifiers, they will face Japan in a friendly in Qatar on Friday (noon ET, streamed on Sportsnet.ca).
Four Canadian MLS players will make the long trip to the Middle East as members of the 21-man Canadian men's national team squad squad that will take on Japan and Belarus in friendlies in Doha, Qatar, on March 22 and 25, respectively.
After earning his first two senior Canadian caps in January against Denmark and the United States, Toronto FC midfielder Kyle Bekker has been called into his second consecutive Canadian camp.
The Canadian national team will continue its preparations for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup with friendly against Belarus on March 25, the Canadian Soccer Association announced on Thursday. The match will also be in Qatar, where the Canadians will face Japan in a friendly three days earlier.
While the Japan game will take place at the Khalifa International Stadium – one of the projected host venues for the 2022 World Cup – the Belarus game will take place at a smaller facility, Aspire Stadium.
Drew Carey must be beside himself.
As was rumored back in January, the US national team will host Belgium for the first time in Cleveland in a May 29 friendly at FirstEnergy Stadium, US Soccer officially announced on Thursday. The match will mark the USMNT’s return to the Seattle Sounders minority owner’s hometown for the first time in seven years.
