SEATTLE – As good as the forward combination of Fredy Montero and Eddie Johnson has been in league play, the David Estrada-Sammy Ochoa partnership might be just as promising in non-league competition.
The two backups each scored for the Sounders during a 3-1 win over Marathón on Wednesday, giving them a combined 15 goals in all competitions this season. Nine of those goals have come outside of league play, with six coming in CONCACAF Champions League alone.
SANDY, Utah – When Real Salt Lake were stunningly undone in the finals of the CONCACAF Champions League in May of last year, they went into an extended funk. Tuesday's CCL elimination at the hands of Herediano may not sting quite that badly, but the Claret-and-Cobalt refuse to fall into the same trap this time around.
"Well I guess there's only one thing left to do ... win the whole [effing] thing."
– Jake Taylor, Major League
If you remember the 1989 classic like I do, you know the scene well. The ragtag but plucky Cleveland Indians had just been informed they were constructed as a band of misfits in order to be so bad, the owner would be able to move the team. It became a rallying point for The Tribe. And may or may not have been where Charlie Sheen got the idea of “tiger blood.”
Victory in Thursday night's CONCACAF Champions League group finale at Isidro Metapán will give the LA Galaxy an optimal quarterfinal seeding. Defeat could be disastrous (10 pm ET, Fox Soccer).
So don't tell them this one doesn't matter.
Sporting Kansas City have done it again.
For the second season in a row, SKC finished atop the Eastern conference after a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night in their final regular-season match. Watch the highlights and celebrations here.
SEATTLE — The crowd on hand to see the Seattle Sounders’ CONCACAF Champions League group stage finale was quite a bit smaller than normal.
Don’t tell Marcus Hahnemann, though. The Seattle native helped lead the Sounders to a 3-1 win over Marathón on Wednesday in hiw first appearance with his hometown team in nearly two decades.
"It was 67,000, I thought,” Hahnemann said with a grin. “That’s what it felt like. It felt pretty good. We still have ECS, they’re cheering the whole game. It was an awesome experience."
GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Toronto FC will be glad they don't have to face Herculez Gomez any more in 2012.
The US international made it four goals in four games against the Canadian side this year, as Santos Laguna beat the Reds 1-0 on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.
Gomez netted in the 73rd minute, with a driven shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat TFC goalkeeper Freddy Hall with its sheer velocity.
