Le LA Galaxy a longtemps cru être en bonne position pour le match retour, mais a finalement encaissé deux buts en fin de rencontre pour s’incliner 1-2 contre Monterrey en demi-finale aller de la Ligue des champions (résumé vidéo).

Tout était pourtant bien engagé pour les Californiens qui, à 10 minutes du terme, menaient grâce au but inscrit par DeLaGarza peu avant la demi-heure. Mais durant le « money time », comme disent les basketteurs, la défense a complètement pris l’eau. L’entrejeu n’était plus aussi fringant depuis la sortie sur blessure de Juninho peu après l’heure de jeu.

Pourtant, le LA Galaxy a eu les occasions de creuser l’écart. Mais l’expérience et la qualité étaient du côté visiteur, au grand désappointement de Bruce Arena qui ne mâchait pas ses mots après le match. Son vis-à-vis, Victor Manuel Vucetich, a effectué des changements payants, qui ont aussi influencé l’issue des débats. Le champion de MLS est désormais obligé d’inscrire deux buts au match retour pour espérer se qualifier pour la finale.

Impossible non plus de ne pas rapporter la rumeur venue d’Italie, et plus précisément de Tuttosport, selon laquelle Francesco Totti aurait reçu « une offre monstre » de la MLS, pour venir jouer de ce côté de l’Atlantique. On ignore en revanche le club concerné.

Consider it their very own Columbus Crew Stadium.

The Costa Rican soccer federation is set to decide on Wednesday whether to stage the Sept. 6 World Cup qualifier against the US national team at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa, where the USMNT has never won, or at the newly constructed Estadio Nacional, which opened its doors in March 2011.

The artificial turf and the proximity of fans to the field and lockers have made the Estadio Saprissa a nightmare venue for the USMNT, living up to its nickname the "Monster's Cave." And the Costa Ricans know it.

The new Estadio Nacional, where Costa Rica have played their recent matches, was a gift by the Chinese government and features a pristine grass surface.

"I only want to confirm what I've been saying: Both stadiums are useful to the national team," said Costa Rica manager Jorge Luis Pinto in November 2012. "When we believe it's convenient, we'll use Saprissa or the National Stadium."

Especially in light of the SnowClasico victory by the USMNT — Costa Rica's protest of the match was struck down by FIFA — the Ticos want to do their best to exact some serious revenge on Jurgen Klinsmann & Co.

There's one hitch: Apparently the state of the artificial turf at Estadio Saprissa is such that it's not even clear that the Costa Rican national team players want to play on it.

Le rêve d’une finale de la Ligue des champions 100% MLS s’est quelque peu éloigné hier soir avec la défaite 0-1 de Seattle lors de sa demi-finale aller contre Santos Laguna (résumé vidéo). Aujourd’hui, le LA Galaxy reçoit Monterrey.

Privé de Johnson et Martins, Sigi Schmid avait effectué plusieurs changements dans son équipe, mal classée en championnat. S’il a vu de signes de progrès, ce fut insuffisant pour éviter la défaite. Le bourreau : Herculez Gomez, un ancien de la maison, qui s’est nourri des quolibets de supporters comme source de motivation. Notons aussi la prestation cinq étoiles de Darwin Quintero. Le match retour à Torreón s’annonce on ne peut plus compliqué. Déjà que ce n’est pas simple d’y aller avec deux buts d’avance…

L’honneur de la MLS repose donc en grande partie sur les épaules du LA Galaxy, qui recevra le tenant du titre, Monterrey, ce mercredi à 22h00 (HE). Bonne surprise : Robbie Keane pourrait être titularisé. Un atout non négligeable contre les Rayados, où évoluent de nombreux internationaux et guidés par leur entraîneur à succès, Victor Manuel Vucetich. Les Californiens ont déjà établi leur plan de match : contrôler le rythme dans l’entrejeu, être efficace sur les phases arrêtées et museler Humberto Suazo.

Put this one in the "It's about time" file: FIFA finally approved goal-line technology last summer, and now they've picked out a provider for this summer's Confederations Cup and next summer's World Cup, both of which will be held in Brazil.

The lucky winners are GoalControl of Germany, who were chosen ahead of three other competitors from around the world, according to a FIFA press release.

Goal-line tech has already been used at last December's Club World Cup, so the Confederations Cup will mark the second FIFA tourney to use it should the final tests go to plan. The Club World Cup went off without incident.

The move for goal-line tech gained momentum after the 2010 World Cup, in which Frank Lampard had what appeared to be a good goal ruled out against Germany in an eventual 4-1 England loss. Some, however, still argue that the shot didn't cross the line.

MLS executives have previously expressed interest in using goal-line technology, though FIFA licensing requirements make the timeframe a bit of a moving target.
