Rumor Central: Angel set to return home to Atletico Nacional

By Matthew Doyle

According to reports out of Colombia, legendary striker Juan Pablo Ángel is returning home.

The former RBNY star, who played the last two years of his MLS career in Los Angeles with the Galaxy and Chivas USA, is said to have signed with Atlético Nacional of Medellín, the club where he made his name in the mid-1990s. This was reported by Ángel's agent:

Ángel has 72 regular-season goals in 152 MLS games, including 58 in 102 with New York, for whom he is the all-time leading scorer. He was one of the league's original Designated Players, and his first MLS season was his best as he scored 19 goals in 24 games in 2007. His five consecutive seasons with double-digit goals (2007-11) is a league record, tied with Carlos Ruiz (2002-2006).

Ángel, 37, slumped badly in 2012, however, tallying just four times in 19 games with the Rojiblancos.

No official word on the move has come from Atlético Nacional. Ángel, who was not selected in the last Re-Entry Draft, is a free agent and would not require a transfer fee.
