Rumor Central: Barcelona product eyeing MLS

By Matthew Doyle

Barcelona have the world's most storied — and prolific — youth program, the famed "La Masia," which has produced the backbone of both Barça and the Spanish national team, both of whom have had record-breaking success over the past six years.

Only the best of the best make it through to the first team, with many others finding places to ply their trade throughout the world.

For 20-year-old central defender Oriol Rosell, that could mean a move to MLS. So says MundoDeportivo, anyway.

What do we know about Rosell? Not much other than his age, height (5-foot-10) and position. He's also — according to Wikipedia, so please take it with a grain of salt — been with the Barcelona system since the age of 14, steadily moving through the ranks until his debut with the Barça B side last season (in Spain's second flight).

His ascent stalled there, however, as Rosell made only six appearances last year and now has been cleared to move away on a free.

Is a stop in MLS in the cards? If so, where do you think he'd best fit?

EDIT: The Twitterverse is apparently a step ahead of the game on this one, informing me that Rosell (as well as Johan Ramirez Neeskens — yes, he's the son of that Johan Neeskens) were on trial in KC at some point in June. Credit to The Washington Post's Steven Goff for the original scoop.
