In honor of Memorial Day, we celebrate the legacy of an American solider that gave back while serving his country.  The mission of The Kick For Nick Foundation is to keep PFC Nicholas A. Madaras’ dream alive.  PFC Nicholas A. Madaras gave his life for is country while on tour in Iraq and his dream was to foster goodwill and peace through soccer by collecting balls and delivering them into the hands of children around the world.  Kick For Nick is a program to collect soccer balls and fulfill Madaras’ wish.  Join MLS WORKS in supporting Kick For Nick and keeping PFC Nick Madaras’ dream alive.  For more information visit www.KickForNick.org

As we enter another weekend of MLS action, one can only hope it is historic like last weekend.  During the New York Red Bulls vs. Chicago Fire match, both Bradley Wright-Phillips and Harry Shipp recorded hat tricks.   That was the first time in League history that two players recorded a hat-trick in the same game.  With the World Cup approaching in less than a month, the excitement is building.  Earlier this week the United States as well as 24 others countries announced their preliminary rosters as we travel further down the Road to Brazil.  Week 12 of MLS soccer is here so before you get comfortable on the couch with an action-packed week of soccer, be sure to check out how your clubs made a difference in the community.

This week, New England welcomes Seattle Sounders FC for a very intriguing match-up.  The Revs take on the top team in the Western Conference lead by former Revolution player, Clint Dempsey.   Dempsey returns to Gillette Stadium with a five-game winning streak and a League-leading eight goals to go along with Obafemi Martins’s six assists.  But hold on… Dempsey isn’t the only one striking the back of the net with regularity.  New York Red Bull’s Bradley Wright-Phillips has scored five goals in the last three games.  Want more?  Before you make last-minute Mother’s Day plans and enjoy a weekend filled with more games and goals, check out how your clubs are making a difference In their community.

As we enter week 8 of the MLS season, history is on the mind of two clubs.  The weekend’s slate of matches kicks off on Saturday as  the Vancouver Whitecaps and San Jose Earthquakes celebrate the 40th anniversary of their clubs competing against each other.   Rumor has it we might see some of The Caps supporters go 1974 retro.  It’ll be fun to see which team will get into a groove and possibly even boogie!    Before we tune-in to the full weekend of matches, be sure to check out how our clubs are impacting their communities.

As we roll into week 8 of the MLS season, five more players will watch their teams from the bench.  With 20 suspensions so far this season many fans wonder if referees have overused their cards this year.  Coming off a mid-week win, will the New York Red Bulls pull off a third consecutive victory over league-leading Columbus Crew this Saturday?  Over in the Western Conference, San Jose will try to earn 3 points against in-state rival Chivas USA this weekend.  On another note, we again want to thank those who celebrated Earth Day with us as well as those who continue to help us “Compete to Beat Malaria” through the rest of April.  Before you kick back and watch the exciting matches this weekend, learn more about how our clubs are making a difference in their communities.

How can a soccer ball help families without electricity?

SOCCKET, a fun, clean energy tool, is a soccer ball that functions as an eco-friendly portable generator.  It captures the natural energy from playing soccer and stores it for later use.   Just 30 minutes of play provides hours of light for a family in need.  This innovative tool improves the lives of children by providing a sustainable, portable, and fun source of energy. It facilitates learning and promotes healthy mental and physical development.

The SOCCKET currently lights homes in Mexico and the United States, with large pilot programs in Nigeria, Brazil, and South Africa. SOCCKETs are scheduled for distribution to Benin, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua.

1.3 Billion people worldwide do not have access to electricity.  Without electricity, children cannot study after dark, parents cannot work once the sun sets, and clinics cannot offer life-saving medical help. Access to modern energy is the key to better healthcare, education, and financial independence for the 1 in 5 people worldwide who do not currently have access to energy.

This Earth Day, MLS WORKS will support Music for Relief by donating SOCCKETS on behalf of our twitter followers.

Simply follow @MLSWORKS & retweet the message sent today (April 22) at 1:00 PM ET from the @MLSWORKS account.  MLS WORKS, in conjunction with Music for Relief will donate SOCCKETS on behalf of our followers that support our efforts by retweeting the message.  Join MLS WORKS to help provide renewable energy to those in need.

The promotion begins on April 22 at 1:00 PM ET.  All donors who retweet will be selected and notified by direct message.

Big news for Major League Soccer this week as the city of Atlanta joins the league as the 22nd franchise.  Scheduled to start play in 2017, the Arthur Blank-owned club will solidify the League's presence in the southeast.  Closer to home, the 2014 Don't Cross the Line PSA will begin airing on TV broadcasts and in-stadium this weekend.  This years PSA features MLS players, fans, and supporters and reinforces the League's commitment to unity, respect, fair play, equality and acceptance throughout the soccer community.  With a full slate of MLS matches scheduled for tomorrow, be sure to check out how our clubs gave back to their communities this week.

Only two clubs remain unbeaten as week 6 of the MLS season begins.  FC Dallas welcomes the Clint Dempsey-led Seattle Sounders FC to town while Real Salt Lake travels to Philadelphia with the intent of being less than brotherly to the Union.  The other storyline of the weekend is Landon Donovan’s quest to become the all-time leading goal scorer in MLS history.   Although Donovan has not scored a goal since October of last year, most will agree that it is only a matter of time before the man that some feel is "the best player in MLS history" joins soccer immortality.  Before we tune-in this weekend with the anticipation of history being made, take a look at some of the great work our clubs performed in the community this week.

As a prelude to the weekend, the U.S. Men’s National Team played to a 2-2 draw with our rivals to the South, Mexico.  As MLS players return to compete for their clubs, many will take the pitch again for 90 minutes in a match that is anything but “Just Another Game”.  Whether it be Houston vs. FC Dallas, this year’s first installment of the SuperClasico (Chivas USA vs. LA Galaxy) or an early Cascadia Cup battle (Portland vs. Seattle) all eyes will be focused on Major League Soccer action this weekend with not only three points on the line, but also bragging rights.  As our League rivals prepare to do battle on the pitch, check out how they served the communities in which they play this week.
