Ce mercredi offrira une nouvelle grande soirée de soccer avec deux matchs de Major League Soccer mais aussi la finale aller de la Ligue des champions.
Le duel 100% mexicain opposera Monterrey, tenant du titre, à un club que plusieurs supporters de clubs de MLS connaissent bien, Santos Laguna. Respectivement quatrième et deuxième du championnat du Mexique, où ils ont perdu leur dernier match, ils s’y sont neutralisés (1-1) le 18 février dernier à Torréon.
Monterrey voudra rejoindre Cruz Azul et Pachuca en devenant le troisième club de l’histoire à conserver son titre de champion de la Concacaf. Santos Laguna tentera de remporter la couronne continentale pour la première fois, et de soulever un trophée, chose qu’il tente sans succès depuis 2008. Et vous, qui supporterez vous lors de cette finale ?
En prélude à ce duel de prestige, vous pourrez assister à un intéressant DC United – Montréal : les Québécois veulent prendre à tout prix au moins un point à Washington où les menaces se nomment De Rosario, De Leon mais aussi Pontius.
Plus tard dans la soirée, Kansas City visera une septième victoire consécutive, à Vancouver où Sébastien Le Toux ne s’inquiète pas de la baisse de rendement offensif constatée ces dernières semaines. Un déplacement difficile pour le leader qui compte sur les leçons apprises l’an dernier pour éviter toute mauvaise surprise.

David Beckham has gone one step closer to making his dream of appearing for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics a reality.
On Wednesday head coach Stuart Pearce and the Football Association announced that an initial squad list of 191 players has been whittled down to 80, with Beckham making the cut. Wales’ Gareth Bale and Craig Bellamy and Englishman Joe Cole also made the list, however any player playing for England at Euro 2012 will not be selected.
The LA Galaxy man reminded fans in the US and worldwide what he is still capable of, with a wonder goal against the Portland Timbers during his side’s 3-1 win on Saturday.
Beckham — who grew up in East London where the games will be held — is keen to be part of Great Britain’s Olympic soccer squad, after helping the team’s successful bidding process way back in 2005.
The draw for the tournament will take place next Tuesday, April 24, as Beckham and the United Kingdom hope for a kind draw on home soil.

Contrairement à il y a deux semaines où, hormis les trois sur penalty, aucun but n’avait été inscrit sur phase arrêtée, lors de la dernière journée, les filets ont tremblé pas moins de 10 fois suite à de telles actions, et ont complètement décidé du sort de cinq rencontres, dont quatre se sont terminées sur le score de 1-0.
Philadelphie, qui ne marque que comme ça depuis le début de la saison (ses deux seuls buts venaient d’un coup franc et d’un corner) a remporté sa première victoire de l’année grâce à un penalty.
Mais ce sont surtout les coups de coin qui ont pesé lourd ce samedi : celui tiré par Graham Zusi sur la tête d’Aurélien Collin a permis à Kansas City de remporter le sommet contre Salt Lake. Zach Scott a repris de la tête un corner d’Alex Caskey pour Seattle contre Colorado. Et celui déposé sur la tête d’Oswaldo Minda par Miller Bolaños a enfoncé le clou pour Toronto face à Chivas USA.
À Dallas, ce fut carton plein avec trois buts sur phase arrêtée : Montréal avait ouvert la marque sur penalty, mais les Texans ont remporté la victoire suite à un coup franc prolongé par Perez au fond des filets puis une rentrée de touche victorieusement exploitée par Brek Shea.

Les semaines se suivent et se ressemblent pour Kansas City, qui a encore gagné. Aurélien Collin a inscrit de la tête le but de la victoire contre Salt Lake, dans un sommet très défensif. Sur les neuf buts marqués par le leader, cinq l’ont été de la tête : 2012 vole haut pour le Sporting !
L’autre match très attendu de ce samedi a aussi tenu ses promesses, avec un 2-2 entre New York et San José. L’armada offensive locale a eu raison de la solide défense californienne mais Thierry Henry a reconnu qu’en deuxième mi-temps, les siens n’ont pas touché au ballon !
Seattle a retrouvé le chemin des filets et de la victoire : le but de Zach Scott contre Colorado, attendu depuis 306 minutes, permet aux hommes de Sigi Schmid de remonter au classement.
En queue de peloton, la solidité défensive retrouvée de Philadelphie combinée à un but de Gomez a permis à l’Union de remporter sa première victoire cette saison. Battu par Chivas USA, plus à l’aise loin de ses bases, Toronto reste calé avec zéro point.
Menant à Dallas grâce à Bernardo Corradi, qui a dédié son but à son ancien coéquipier Piermario Morosini, Montréal a raté le coche en s’inclinant en fin de match face à un adversaire peu convaincant. Le LA Galaxy a enfin renoué avec la victoire, battant Portland dans un duel des mal classés.

Salt Lake a tout intérêt à se méfier car il a encaissé ses quatre buts cette saison sur attaque posée. Jason Kreis a d’ailleurs décidé de revoir ses plans tactiques avant ce déplacement périlleux. Pour son homologue Peter Vermes, la clef d’une sixième victoire consécutive sera d’avoir le dessus sur les deuxièmes ballons.

Le choc de la Red Bull Arena sera celui des buteurs. Chris Wondolowski, qui porte à lui seul l’attaque californienne, se sent prêt à concurrencer le duo Henry – Cooper. Il voudra aussi profiter d’une défense new yorkaise affaiblie par la blessure de Conde.

With wins over Columbus, Philadelphia and Chicago in 3 of their first 4 games to start the 2012 MLS Season, Colorado seemed to be moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, that all came to a halt this past weekend when RSL ran rampant in the second half, possibly in part to a makeshift formation.
Drew Moor played midfield for the first time since I don’t know when and Tyrone Marshall filled in as if everything was just fine and dandy. Moor played alright – with 87 touches (second most among all players), winning nine of his 13 duels and completing 44 of 59 passes (75 percent). All in all, he was quite active.
Now let’s dig a little deeper and examine some graphics produced by the Opta Chalkboards that show Moor’s presence (in the defensive third), in every game so far this season. Let’s select clearances, blocks and interceptions by Moor in Colorado’s first five games and what Marshall did when he filled in vs RSL.
You can see what Marshall did – or didn’t do – against RSL (he has #34 inside his circles), but can you pick the corresponding image for Moor in that game as well?
If you haven’t guessed which graphic represents Moor’s production from the Real Salt Lake game, it’s the top right. Marshall’s clearances, blocks and interceptions vs RSL are shown in the bottom right image.
Put together the images from both players’ vs RSL and it still doesn’t equal the defensive production Drew Moor has had in any previous game this season. Colorado has to make adjustments soon because Moor’s absence on the backline could prove to be quite costly over time.

Playing Together? – Larentowicz and Moor’s Positioning vs RSL
As seen in the graphic below, Colorado lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Drew Moor and Jeff Larentowicz playing as duel holding midfielders.
If this was the plan from Head Coach Oscar Pareja, everything went awry. After playing around with the Opta Chalkboards, you can see that Larentowicz and Moor played much different roles. The image below shows all passes completed by the two midfielders from box-to-box – Larentowicz on the left and Moor on the right.
Larentowicz seemed to play his normal role regardless, but Moor acted as if he was told to play right mid. How do players – that start the game in similar positions – end up with completely different outcomes?
