Major League Soccer is proud to support the FARE Network Action Weeks, which unites supporters, clubs, ethnic minorities and communities affected by other forms of discrimination in an  effort to make discrimination a thing of the past.

From October 15-29, FARE Network will host more than 500 activities in 50 countries, which will take place across all levels of the game from grassroots and fan initiatives to major professional leagues associations. Action Weeks activities are designed to bring diverse groups together in an effort to stimulate open discourse about the challenges they face locally with discrimination.  Each year, this union of individuals presents a unified stand against discrimination in the game of soccer.

This year, one of the most decorated players in MLS history chose to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of D.C. youth. Now in his third season with United, Dwayne De Rosario has truly embraced United for D.C. and the Kicks for Kids program.

“When approached with the opportunity to partner with United for D.C. and help bring kids from at risk areas of the city to RFK to watch us play, I was very excited to help. I was raised in a challenging environment, and I had to work extremely hard to pursue my dream. If I can impact at least one kid’s life, my mission has been accomplished,” said De Rosario.

The Black-and-Red captain has donated $10,000 to United for D.C., and through DeRo’s Stars, has brought 500 kids to games throughout the 2013 season. In addition, De Rosario personally invites groups to the field level after each game to meet his guests and sign autographs.

As part of the League’s Soccer Kicks Cancer initiative, MLS WORKS and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® teamed up in September for our annual Goals for St. Jude campaign on behalf of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Goals for St. Jude ambassadors, Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls), Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA) and Shea Salinas (San Jose Earthquakes) supported the campaign during Goals for St. Jude week (Sept. 8-14)  and joined MLS WORKS to help increase survival rates for childhood cancer and promote the lifesaving work happening every day at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Additionally, MLS WORKS pledged $100.00 to St. Jude for every MLS goal scored during the month of September.  By netting 109 goals this month, MLS players generated over $10,000 in donations for St. Jude.

On September 10th, prior to the USA vs. Mexico 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier game at Crew Stadium, MLS WORKS partnered with the Columbus Crew to conduct a Crew Massive Makeover of the Linden Village Green Space Community Garden.  The beautification project gave staff members from various MLS Clubs and the League office the opportunity to give back to the Linden community while in town for the MLS Business Summit.  MLS volunteers participated in various activities including building a fence on the property, assembling a storage unit, patio and pergola, installing benches and a swing, planting flowers and trees and prepping planters for next season’s vegetables.  Once the volunteer enhancements were complete, a permanent water tap was installed on the property so that the community gardeners have access to water throughout the year. To show their gratitude to the Columbus Crew, The Linden Green Space Community Garden Association donated $200.00 to the Kirk Urso Memorial fund which provides a platform to develop and support youth heart health research and programming as well as honor the memory of Crew midfielder Kirk Urso. The day of service was part of “Community Care Day” in the City of Columbus and was in conjunction with the Greater Linden Development Corporation and the United Way of Columbus.
