AMSTERDAM – Jermaine Jones returned to the Schalke lineup in a losing cause on Tuesday, as the home side dropped a 3-0 decision to Champions League guests Chelsea.

The US midfielder, who had not started a game for the Miners since late last month, departed the proceedings carrying a yellow card in the 71st minute.

With Schalke still only trailing by one in the 67th minute, poor finishing denied Jones a game-tying assist. The No. 13 shirt dutifully nodded a corner kick across the goalmouth, only to watch Benedickt Höwedes somehow nod wide from the doorstep.

Bosnia-Herzegovina qualified for the 2014 World Cup with a 1-0 win over Lithuania in Kaunas on Tuesday, a landmark achievement for the tiny nation – and one that can be traced, in some small part, to the US heartland.

The man who scored the decisive goal for the Dragons is Vedad Ibisevic, the 29-year-old striker with rich American ties. During his teenage years, his family emigrated from Bosnia to escape the brutal ethnic conflict that engulfed the region in the 1990s, eventually settling in St. Louis.

AMSTERDAM – Reading midfielder Danny Williams is close to returning from a foot injury, but the club is still unsure if he'll be fit in time for Saturday's league trip to Burnley.

The US international has missed three Championship games since taking a kick to his foot during their September 18 win over Leeds United, which saw him set up the lone goal winner deep into stoppage time.

On Thursday, manager Nigel Adkins stated that Williams' availability for Saturday was still questionable.

Exports: Kljestan & Co. suffer heavy home loss in Champions League

AMSTERDAM – Despite a solid showing from Sacha Kljestan, Anderlecht went down to a wasteful 3-0 defeat against UEFA Champions League Group C visitors Olympiacos on Wednesday.

The US midfielder was horse-collared in front of goal in the 24th minute, earning his side a chance to cancel their early deficit from the spot. However, teen striker Aleksandar Mitrovic had his soft penalty attempt smothered by Olympiacos netminder Roberto.
