AMSTERDAM – Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones made an impact as a halftime sub as the Miners moved to the top of Champions League Group B with a 2-0 triumph at Arsenal on Wednesday.

Thanks to second-half goals by Ibrahim Afellay and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the visitors climbed to a point above the Gunners after three Matchdays. Schalke are now unbeaten in their last nine road games across all competitions, dating back to last season.

AMSTERDAM – There's no doubt about it: American sports fans are a nation of stat nerds.

And we love our history too: who played the longest, who scored the most goals, who won the most titles.

So indulge your inner geek for a second while we run the latest numbers on our boys overseas and see – statistically speaking, of course – what’s worth counting abroad.

AMSTERDAM – Several US internationals returned to club duty on Sunday, with Tim Howard backstopping 10-man Everton to a 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers.

After being foiled by David Hoilett's sharply deflected second-minute opener, the netminder tallied five saves. Howard got a measure of revenge on the Canadian forward with a strong pair of diving stops after the break as the fourth place Toffees stayed unbeaten in five EPL games.

Outside the US win over Antigua & Barbuda and Canada's defeat of Cuba, it was a lean start to the international break for MLS players representing their national teams.

Though MLSers did make some valuable contributions, only the Philadelphia Union's Keon Daniel found the back of the net, hitting an insurance goal in Trinidad & Tobago's 4-1 win over French Guyana in the Caribbean Cup qualifying tournament.

AMSTERDAM – Several Americans took part in Europa League action on Thursday, with Steve Cherundolo captaining Hannover 96 as they defeated Group L guests Levante 2-1 despite going down to 10 men.

Hannover fell behind both a goal and a man when Karim Haggui's penalty foul was converted by Míchel in the 10th minute. Cherundolo allowed the slip pass that set up the spot kick, but got revenge when his 49th-minute cross pinballed around to Didier Ya Konan for the deciding tally.
