MLS Insider

19 October 10:20 am

We've arrived at the bitter end. Every club in MLS save for the Philadelphia Union has just two matches remaining, max.

So at a time of the year when players are starting to take their game to the next level, it's good to see the front offices and PR staffs following suit.

Case in point: Every Game Counts, a slick, new behind-the-scenes video series from the Houston Dynamo.

The latest installment is below, featuring Brad Davis, Giles Barnes and the no-longer flat-topped rookie Warren Creavalle.

Quality.

18 October 12:06 pm

We might have shortchanged Matt Hedges a bit in our last Rookie of the Year campaign update.

Just two days after Nick DeLeon threw down his breakfast bowl, Hedges has also come out against Austin Berry and Big Cereal.

Berry (right) might have the cereal box good looks, and DeLeon has his highlight reel, but you can't argue with Hedges sticking to one of his core principles here: Bacon.

Check out the video below, good stuff from the sneaky clever crew in Frisco:

P.S. This has to be the first year where we have teams legit campaigning for this award, right? Fun for all.

17 October 9:36 am

No surprise, but the Twitterverse was on fire last between the hours of 7 and 9pm ET. And it wasn't because Obama and Romney were about to talk foreign policy.

Nope, the topic at hand was a domestic affair. Presenting (some of) the best tweets from the USMNT's Hex-clinching win over Guatemala in KC, starting with a guy who just can't seem to get there this year:

LSP did indeed look incredible once again, and once the US settled in, we actually had some great TV. The Worldwide Leader got in on the fun...

Dempsey's first strike of the night put plenty of American fans at ease, so much so that it prompted Shawn Francis to break out an old classic with his boy EJ...

When the final whistle blew, it was reaction time. Heath Pearce speculated on what the Hex might hold:

Fulfilling their duties as gracious hosts, the (Sporting) Kansas City contingent weighed in postgame:

And of course, you can't not end with this. Deuce, meet Deuce.

15 October 4:35 pm

It's election season, folks. Rally behind your candidate and get ready to fill out your ballot, the 2012 race for Rookie of the Year is steaming right along.

Darren Mattocks might have been the odds on favorite a few months ago, but thanks to some expert campaigning in Chi-Town and Dallas, Austin Berry and Matt Hedges have come to the fore.

Today we had a third party getting in on the fun: Enter Nick DeLeon and D.C. United

In what you could call the first smear campaign of this year's race, we have DeLeon pouring out and devouring a bowl of Austin Berrys in what appears to be an auxiliary break room at RFK. Pure class.

So what say you, voters? Have DeLeon and DCU done enough? Or is Berry's lead in the polls insurmountable at this point? Unfortunately for Mr. Hedges being the second most impressive defender in class doesn't do much for your approval rating.

If only we had a debate between the three candidates to help us decide, guess that's what playoffs are for.

04 October 10:26 am

We're getting closer to Saturday's massive matchup between New York and Chicago (3:30pm ET, NBC), and as part of the buildup, MLSSoccer.com is giving you the chance to interact with four of the fixture's most central characters.

Beginning at 1:15pm ET today, log on to MLSSoccer.com/live to see Dax McCarty, Heath Pearce, Patrick Nyarko and Austin Berry in a live Google+ hangout hosted by MLSSoccer.com editor Andrew Wiebe

The Red Bulls duo of McCarty and Pearce will be live at 1:15pm ET, followed by Nyarko and Berry at 1:45pm ET.

Mr. Wiebe will be taking your questions to pass along to the guys, so if you want to submit any, leave them in the comments or ask them on Twitter using the hashtag #NYvCHI.

Should be a good time, the last one we did certainly was. See you then.

October means a lot of things in MLS. The playoff field is determined, the Golden Boot winner crowned and starting soon, the pink balls are rolled out.

How come? Well, if you're just joining us, MLS W.O.R.K.S. announced the details around the League's breast cancer awareness campaign that will go into effect...tonight.

Yep, when the bright lights come on at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park tonight for Sporting KC-Chicago, you'll see a brand new pink adidas PRIME matchball being kicked about, and that's just the start of a month-long push to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and treatment.

What else is going on? Look out for a special pink MLS W.O.R.K.S. ribbon patch on every player kit, pink shoelaces, pink sweatbands, you name it. Your club's goalkeeper might even end up donning a pair of pink gloves.

All 19 clubs will be participating (awesome), and an array of limited edition Breast Cancer Awareness swag will be available at the stadiums, in special retail locations and on MLSGear.com/MLSGearCanada.ca

The best part about that? A portion of the proceeds will benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation in Canada.

That's all in addition to the auction of the pink match balls and game-worn gear on MLSSoccer.com/works starting on October 15.

Pretty cool if you ask us.

25 September 12:16 pm

Happy EA Sports FIFA 13 release day, everybody.

The game might be dropping in stores right now, but the festivities started last night in Manhattan as athletes, movie stars and musicians gathered to celebrate the launch and the unveiling of a special downloadable cover featuring four extra-special MLSers.

For his part in topping the 24 Under 24 charts, we knew Darren Mattocks would be one of the featured faces. The other three? Fredy Montero, Tim Cahill and Chris Wondolowski also appear thanks to a fan vote.

Cahill was on hand to say a few words along with many of his new teammates, most of whom have probably used Timmy himself in past editions many-a-time.

Joining the RBNY crew were the likes of Susan Sarandon, New York Giants wideout Victor Cruz and the night's guest of honor, the one-and-only Snoop Lion. Or Dogg. Whichever you prefer.

As you might expect, Snoop was the last to roll up. Still, the rapper made the most of his time at SPiN New York, working the room as well as the sticks.

See below:

Cruz wasn't Snoop's only opponent of the night. Nope, he also mixed it up with Mr. Jimmy Conrad. Look out for some footage from the KICKTV crew very soon, and take it easy on the gameplay today.

OK, you're right, don't.

11 September 8:32 am

And now he's got his own show.

Yep, news today is that KICKTV will be bringing you bald eagles and the beautiful game with the launch of Jimmy Conrad's American Soccer Spectacular.

JC crushed the Euros this summer, and with autumn on the way, he's going to tackle some of the domestic game's greatest debates, with some monster trucks and hot dogs thrown in for good measure.

First episode is set to drop next Thursday, featuring a name that's been thrown around plenty on the Twittersphere of late. That's the only hint for now.

The official preview is below, hit the Play button and have a happy weekend. Peace.

05 September 3:30 pm

It's that time of year again. Clear your evening and weekend schedules, because you're about to have other plans.

Yep, FIFA 13 is dropping soon, and EA Sports needs your help making this year's edition as fresh as possible.

As part of the pageantry around the release, EA Sports is creating an extra-special downloadable cover for you to enjoy every time you fire up that console.

The cover will feature four players. One will be the top-ranked athlete from the 24 Under 24 list, the other three are up in the air. That's where you come in.

Every club has a player nominated, all you need to do is vote for your guy as many times as possible between now and September 15.

What's in it for you? Well, besides the chance at ensuring video-gaming glory for your favorite club, you'll also be entered to win a trip for two to MLS Cup 2012 to hang in the EA Sports Sideline FIFA Lounge (left). Airfare, hotel accomodations and tickets all included.

Pretty sweet, right? We think so, too.

Vote on, and don't forget the official FIFA 13 release date: Your life changes for the better on September 25.
