With just under three weeks until the 2014 AT&T MLS All-Star game, the Fans’ XI was announced on Wednesday. Eight of the eleven players chosen by the fans were members of the USMNT World Cup roster and the other three are soccer icons that have World Cup memories of their own. On Sunday evening a heated rivalry is renewed when the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers battle head-to-head in another edition of the Cascadia Cup. Before World Cup fever grows with anticipation of a US v. Belgium match on Tuesday, and MLS action gets back into the swing of things, take a moment to learn how your clubs have made a difference in their communities.
The World Cup is in full swing, headlined by a USMNT victory over Ghana. This Sunday, the Red, White, & Blue look to ride the winning momentum into their second match against Portugal. MLS stars have already made their mark on this World Cup…none shining brighter than Australia’s Tim Cahill who has scored 2 goals in 2 games and 5 of the 11 goals scored by the Australian National team in World Cup history. The 2014 World Cup is underway with 32 teams competing for the FIFA World Cup Trophy . On Monday, the United States will challenge Ghana in their first match in Brazil. Closer to home, D.C. United moved into first place in the Eastern Conference after Luis Silva scored a hat-trick in the first half of their match against the Montreal Impact on Wednesday. With no MLS play for two weeks, be sure and tune in as the Stars and Stripes attempt to shock the world and advance out of the “Group of Death”. MLS history was made last weekend by none other than LA Galaxy star, Landon Donovan, who showed his mental toughness after being thrust into the spotlight last week following the U.S. Men’s National Team announcement. During LA’s match against the Union, Donovan broke the record for MLS goals scored with his 137th goal. Meanwhile, the USMNT continues to prepare for the “Group of Death” as they enter the second match of their send-off series. Following Tuesday’s win over Azerbaijan, the United States will take on Turkey in an international friendly at Red Bull Arena. This week, New England welcomes Seattle Sounders FC for a very intriguing match-up. The Revs take on the top team in the Western Conference lead by former Revolution player, Clint Dempsey. Dempsey returns to Gillette Stadium with a five-game winning streak and a League-leading eight goals to go along with Obafemi Martins’s six assists.
