All-Star

05 July 6:23 pm

EA SPORTS is running the Imagine Yourself Here sweepstakes on MLSsoccer.com that could win some lucky fan two seats in the Sideline FIFA Soccer Lounge at the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, taking place July 25 at PPL Park.

Sounds pretty cool. And it got us thinking about what the sensual experience of sitting sideline might actually be like.

So we asked New York Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty

If someone has a sideline seat, what can he or she expect you hear?

McCarty: Honestly, it’s a mix of Al Pacino in Scarface and Tupac. It can get a little intense with the heat of the competition. Things get said that you wouldn’t say to your Mom. But there’s also lots of communication. It’s like you have 11 guys all playing quarterback, barking out instructions, encouraging other guys.

What will they see?

McCarty: The subtle connections players have, like the movement of, say, the right back and right midfielder. You’ll see the playmaker’s subtle movements and the runs off the ball. For example, if the center back has the ball, you’ll notice a guy like Thierry Henry breaking off to run onto a long ball. You see the play before it happens.

What will they smell?

McCarty: Ha! Dirty laundry. Or a locker room. Definitely odors you don’t experience in the second deck with the hot dogs and nachos. It’s musky. You also can sometimes smell freshly cut grass. And dirt when the turf comes up on a slide tackle near the sidelines. But the muskiness outweighs the grass.

What will they taste?

McCarty: The moisture and the sweat of 22 guys running around. But it’s also metaphorical. You can taste the effort.

What will they feel?

McCarty: You might feel the grass under your feet. You feel how hard the field is or how soft it is. But mostly, you feel the emotion. You feel how much everyone wants to win.

MLS W.O.R.K.S., the Philadelphia Union Foundation, the Chester Upland School District and organizers from KaBOOM! hosted a design day for children at Science & Discovery High School yesterday. Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Chase Harrison was on-site to help out children from the Chester neighborhood put crayon to paper to draw their dream playgrounds. Elements from the children's drawings will be incorporated into the final design for the new community playground, which will be built on July 24 as part of the All-Star festivities and will provide more than 500 children in the Chester community with a safe place to play.

While the MLS All-Stars will await an announcement on who will be their new head coach, their opponents for the July 25 fixture just solidified theirs.

In a press release from Chelsea FC on Wednesday, they announced that Italian manager Roberto Di Matteo – who led his side to both the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup titles – has signed a two-year contract with the club. Di Matteo took the reins at Chelsea during the final 11 weeks of the season after replacing Andre Villas-Boas during the first weekend in March.

Says Chelsea's chief executive Ron Gourlay: "Roberto's quality was clear for all to see when he galvanised the squad last season and helped the club make history, and the owner and board are very pleased he will be continuing his good work. Although he has set the bar very high in the short time he has been in charge, we know that Roberto is the right man to lead Chelsea onto further success."

What are the chances that the MLS All-Star team will be facing the Champions League trophy winners come July?

The odds certainly improved when Chelsea beat Barcelona in the semifinals this week. They will next face Bayern Munich -- who beat Real Madrid on Wednesday -- in the Champions League final.

Once that's done, though, Chelsea will turn their attention to their US tour, which will, of course, include the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game, July 25, at PPL Park outside of Philadelphia.

You want to be there, don't you? Well, tickets went on presale starting today.

At halftime of Saturday's match between Philadelphia and Columbus on NBC Sports Network, the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game jersey was revealed.

This is what the MLSers will wear when they take on Chelsea on July 25.

What do you think?

12 April 7:15 pm

Oh, that Jimmy Conrad. He's had a good life on the soccer field.

He played in the World Cup.

He captained Chivas USA.

Oh, and he beat Chelsea when Jose Mourinho was their manager.

Did you watch the live broadcast of the 2012 All Star game press conference yesterday? Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz was absolutely beaming.

And why not? After all the guy did play a pivotal role in bringing soccer to Philly, even funding the first four months of the endeavor on his personal Amex card, so you'd expect that he'd be as happy as an unmarked forward in the 18 yd-box.

But what about the fans? How do the Philadelphia faithful feel about the league's summer showcase coming to town?

"It's going to be fantastic," says Liverpool native and Son of Ben Mark Jenkinson. "It's great that they're all starting to take place in purpose-built stadiums."

Now knowing where Jenkinson hails from you will be in no way shocked to learn who his choice of dream ASG opponent is.

"Obviously Liverpool," he offers with a laugh, "or any really top-tier club. I'd really like to see East v. West again though. It may not have the draw of playing against a Real Madrid but it's definitely in the spirit of what an All Star game is all about."

He's not alone in his desire to see Liverpool trade in the Mersey for the Delaware River.

"I'd love to see Liverpool, Barcelona of course. Pretty much anyone except Manchester United."

Those are the words of Union fan Kelly Christine Delaney who is something of an all-inclusive All Star game fan.

"I was at the NBA All-Star game when it was in Philadelphia, I was at the MLB All Star game when it was at Veteran's Stadium and I'll be at the NBA All Star game again this year," says Delaney. "It's fun. They always feel like a Harlem Globetrotters game, even the baseball one, because there's a lot of showboating and everyone is there to have a good time. At the end of the night I can go home without being upset whether we won or lost."
