#9. Danny Mwanga
Pos: F | Philadelphia Union | Age: 20
Mwanga’s sophomore season may feel like a bit of a letdown after a rookie campaign which promised so much going into 2011. But a closer look at the stats shows that he’s already nearly matched his output from last year as the Union remain steadfast in their policy of bringing up their young players slowly. Regardless of his playing time, the No. 1 SuperDraft pick continues to impact matches, whether he starts or comes off the bench. By managing his minutes, Peter Nowak may have saved his 20-year-old forward primed and fresh for a memorable stretch run.
What the TDs and coaches say: “Lots of talent – physical and technical – and lots of upside … Can be a force in the league in the future if he continues to grow … Has strength but also has power … He’s probably the best of the clinical finishers and he can finish the ball with either foot and on awkward bounces … He’s always hunting the ball down … Has the vision and passing ability to be a better second striker … He makes pretty good decisions but he needs to make better decisions … Doesn’t get a lot of starting time and I think that’s because of the age. He needs more games and experience at this level … Needs to keep learning from senior guys as to when to take guys on and when to shoot.”
