#23. Jack McInerney
Pos: F | Philadelphia Union | Age: 19
No questioning McInerney’s work ethic and the havoc he creates with his runs at forward. The Union continue to bring him on slowly but the 19-year-old has not yet been able to capitalize on increased playing time compared to his 2010 rookie season The good news is that the Union are still searching for a regular scorer even this late in the season, which can give McInerney hope for next year as he looks to make a claim for a spot on the US Olympic team.
What the TDs and coaches say: “We have to see if he can become a regular … Needs more playing time to mature but looks like a good finisher, sharp in the final third with good technique … Physically a bit lightweight, needs a bigger guy next to him to bring out his best qualities … He’s been coached to make the right runs up top. He has good sense of timing. Can make the run to clear the space and make the run for himself. He’s elusive and has that acceleration and change of pace. He’s quick … Decision-making is a big thing he needs to improve on: when to take players on and when to pass ... Has to learn to read the space behind the defender.”
